CitC 2017 is go!

Delighted to say that Clyde in the Classroom 2017 got off to a flying start at our launch days at Glasgow Science Centre last week. We were thoroughly impressed by the enthusiasm of this year’s trout guardians and look forward to visiting each of the schools over the course of the project. Some schools have already received their hatcheries and are experimenting with temperature control. More updates to follow and be sure to tweet us at @ClydeRF using #ClydeintheClassroom.

Clyde in the Classroom welcomes its 25,000th pupil

The Clyde River Foundation celebrated a major milestone last week as they welcomed the 25,000th pupil to date to the project.

The 17th season of the project was launched in partnership with Glasgow Science Centre between Wednesday 11th and Friday 13th January. 46 classes across 41 Primary Schools across the River Clyde catchment are participating – a total of 1265 children, ranging from P3 to P7.

Clyde in the Classroom started in 2000 with five schools in Glasgow. It is now the Clyde River Foundation’s longest running and largest education project. The project links very well with the Curriculum for Excellence and it enables teachers to deliver many learning outcomes from science and maths to arts and drama.

The project is crowd-funded by the participating schools plus a range of supporters including The Crown Estate Scotland Portfolio (main sponsor), the John Mather Charitable Trust, the WA Cargill Fund and the Cruden Foundation.

As has been tradition for the past few years now, we awarded any newly-participating schools with a personalised poster to highlight their achievements throughout the journey. Competition now open!

We are happy to announce this year’s Clyde in the Classroom competition and would welcome all participants to get involved!

Last year Scotland introduced a 5p bag charge to help reduce the impact of single use carrier bags on our environment. Plastics make up the majority of litter in our rivers we have decided to use this year’s Clyde in the Classroom competition to help tackle the problem and would like you to design an image for a Clyde River Foundation eco-bag!

The theme for the design is ‘Caring for the Clyde’.
We will accept more than one entry per class but only one design can win! The winning design will be printed onto a cream cotton bag and all members of the winner’s class will receive a bag.
Max design size: A4
Closing date: Friday 6th May

UK National Fish Vote – get involved!

Last year the robin won the vote for the UK’s favourite bird. This year the vote is out for our favourite fish! The UK National Fish Survey will find out what our favourite freshwater and saltwater fish species are and it has come at a perfect time for Clyde in the Classroom! The vote has been organised by Jack Perks who kindly donated his video footage of fish for our Clyde in the Classroom presentation. As we wait for the delivery of our eyed eggs, why not take time to participate in this fun vote and learn more about our fishy friends as you go?

Activities you can link to the vote for you class
– Find out more about fish species in the UK
– Find out which fish on the voting lists can be found in the River Clyde?
– Produce written work, videos and presentations to make the case for your top fish!

The Vote
– Choose from 20 freshwater and 20 saltwater species
– Pick your favourites and then decide as a class on your overall favourites (one freshwater and one saltwater; the entry requires an email address so teachers would enter on behalf of the class)
– Enter online on the UK National Fish Vote website http://www.btwlfishproject.com/ by March 26th
– You can also make a 1-minute video plea for your choice of fish; we’d really love to see this happen!

Egg postponement

We have just been informed by Iain that our eggs which we had rescheduled to bring out next week are still not ready for delivery. The water temperature has been so low that is has slowed the egg growth down by three weeks! This is the first time in the 15 years of the project that we have had to wait until the middle of February to deliver your eggs. On the plus side this means that we do not need to worry about the February holiday and the pupils will be experts at reading thermometers and temperature regulation. You will be emailed shortly with your new egg delivery date and our apologies for any inconvenience caused. We will be out next week to visit your school and discuss this egg growth process with the pupils.
